Light object | Special edition

“Anyone who wears sweatpants has lost control of their life.” Just like the high shirt collar, the braid of hair and the dark sunglasses, his brash sayings became the trademark of fashion czar Karl Lagerfeld.
26 × 22 × 40 cm
Description

Two ODD BIRDS at a picnic at the Borowski summer exhibition: KARL serves FRIDA at lunch with SNIPPY glass fish.

KARL – attitude in black and white

“Fashion czar” Karl Lagerfeld knew the importance of his silhouette, much like Warhol. His personal style and many of his designs were characterized by a strong, graphic black and white look. This reduction did justice to his way of thinking, which was based on radical rationality, analysis and dualism. Uncompromising discipline, an extremely direct, often caustic manner and an unyielding attitude towards aesthetics were reflected in his carefully constructed uniform, which expressed professionalism and distance. His posture was often stiff and distant, underlining his role as an unapproachable icon and “fashion czar”.

The defining elements of his style can be found in the design of our light object KARL: the black jacket, the high shirt collar, the white powdered ponytail tied with a bow, as worn by the military in the 18th century, and the dark sunglasses. Even his typical, controlled facial expression with the distinctive lower lip can be found in caricatured form in Glasvogel KARL.

The handwriting behind the big houses

KL was a formative figure in international fashion for decades. As the creative head of Chanel, Fendi and Chloé, he knew how to analyze the DNA of major houses and reinterpret it for the present.

He was a designer, photographer and costume designer – and at the same time his own production. A “chameleon of fashion” who was constantly changing and yet always remained clearly recognizable. His work was characterized by precision, analysis and a consistent play with contrasts.

Stylish appearance, powerful effect

It is due to Karl Lagerfeld’s personality that we have done things differently with KARL than with the rest of the ODD BIRDS. KARL deviates from the typical body shape and is slimmer, taller and deliberately stiffer and more severe in his posture.

KARL also goes its own way in terms of color design: instead of the strong tones characteristic of Borowski, this object relies on a warm, restrained glow. The graphic design in black and white tones thus comes more to the fore and brings a calm, clear effect to the room.

As soon as you recognize the fashion czar, you can’t help but smile. Both inside and out, KARL has a restrained yet unique look: reduced to the essentials, with precisely placed details.

KARL AT THE SUMMER EXHIBITION 2022

For the premiere of the BONZOs, the ODD BIRDS travelled casually by Oldsmobile. Actually, a black stretch limousine was supposed to bring the whole flock of birds to the summer exhibition in Königswinter. But BUD quickly rented an old pickup. UDO stayed cool and actually liked it … finally someone was just doing their own thing again.

KARL, who was largely involved in the design of the BONZOs‘ costumes, certainly did not miss the opportunity to personally drive the old Ford to the summer exhibition in Königswinter with 26 other ODD BIRDS on board.

The third brood
Special edition ODD BIRDS

The third brood

The third ODD BIRDS brood in 2021 was dedicated to icons from art, music, film and fantasy. Instead of realistic portraits, free, humorous interpretations are created that playfully take up the typical characteristics and traits of the role models.

Thus, this edition brings together creative geniuses and fictional screen characters. Molten glass is transformed into distinctive objects full of personality — handcrafted, vibrant in color, and rich in small details waiting to be discovered.

A collection for anyone who enjoys extraordinary personalities and unusual glass design.

Manual Work

A Fusion of Tradition, Craftsmanship and Innovation

Exclusive glass art from the Borowski glass factory

Each object shown here reflects the craftsmanship of our glassmakers. What appears lighthearted, playful, and full of color is in fact created through a demanding and often physically challenging production process. Today, only a small number of people and glass studios worldwide still master the traditional art of glassmaking.

At the Borowski Glass Studio, nearly all known techniques of hot and cold glassworking can be applied. This exceptional range of possibilities allows our artists to continuously develop new ideas and bring even highly ambitious, experimental visions to life in glass.

The brothers Stani-Jan, Wiktor, and Pawel Borowski learned to work with the blowpipe and molten glass from the ground up. While Wiktor primarily oversees sales, Pawel and Stani-Jan still work daily at the furnace in the glass studio themselves.

As each object is mouth-blown and traditionally handcrafted, slight variations in color, shape, and size are unavoidable. Small air inclusions in the glass are characteristic features of genuine handcrafted studio glass and should not be regarded as flaws, but rather as signs of its individual production process.

Outdoor Objects

OUTDOOR OBJECTS

SUNNY AND SAFE – IN ALL WEATHERS

The friendly figures and characters of the OUTDOOR OBJECTS ensure “fabulous” encounters in gardens and parks – in the true sense of the word. As if from another world chameleons, birds, armadillos, and all sorts of creatures appear – bringing a little piece of their world into our own. The OUTDOOR OBJECTS create a wonderful link to their environment – inviting their owners to smile, dream and linger. These highly individual, happy visitors will enliven your garden or balcony and give your favourite spot a very special magic.

The OUTDOOR OBJECTS are weatherproof and can stand outside all year long. All these art objects are handmade and hand blown with the utmost care.

SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

When fastening your object, you should make sure that it stands securely and does not wibble or tip over, even in wind or knocks. Use the mounting eyelets we provide for this purpose. Position your object so that it is safe from falling rocks or braking branches. Keep in mind that the objects are very heavy due to their quality and protruding parts (e.g. beaks, eyes, ears, tails, crowns) are not suitable as handles.
